Ballan. How it all started.

Today the Racing.com episode went to air during the coverage of the Ballarat races.

Ballan is how this all started for me. At the risk of repeating myself, I'll explain. We'd been for lunch in Daylesford (at The Lakehouse to be precise.) We were driving home, approaching Ballan when I saw the sign - "Race Course Road." I had Denise take a photo as we passed knowing that Apple would have the GPS coordinates and that I could explore. And I did/have. For the best part of 10 years now.

The immediate thought was that I'd never heard of racing at Ballan. And it turns out that there's a reason for that. I wasn't born before it stopped. Anyway, we roll the tape forwards and the rest is history really. I've been on the crusade to find them all. All of the "lost" or "former" racetracks in Victoria.

I enjoyed going back to Ballan and recording this one. We got access to the existing infrastructure and met and chatted with the locals. Ed, Leigh and I had a great day. The truth is that each episode is about 10 minutes but we had a lot more here that we didn't use. Like the fact that the Bradshaw railway siding was just up the road and it's here that the train stopped and let the horses and spectator's off. The Horses were walked down the road to the course for their races. And the first license for the course describes it as being at "Bradshaw's."

We had a lot of fun with this one and I think that comes across. Ed and Leigh are great to work with.

There's another episode in the works, the final one for this season. I won't give it all away but at the end of Ballan we give a pretty clear indication of where we go next. And yes, I hope we're back after Spring to show you some more. I have some great locations up my sleeve for the next series.

Have fun out there. You never know what you'll find.

Cheers

Chris
