I’ve always loved maps. When I travel I always look at the maps of wherever I am. They’re fascinating things – treasure troves of history and the past. Recently I’ve noticed a number of places in Victoria where the names have changed.

Did you know that Victoria was once the Southern region of the colony of New South Wales, the colony of Port Phillip and Australia Felix?

That Melbourne was Batmania?

That Torquay was Puebla, Lara was Duck Ponds, Leopold was Kensington, Little River was Rothwell and Grovedale was Germantown? Well they all were, but there’s plenty more.

Here’s a list of some more that I’ve come across:

Now Once was

Avonsleigh East Emerald

Bacchus Marsh Maddingley

Bayswater Scoresby North

Bendigo Sandhurst

Brunswick Phillipstown

Burwood Ballyshanassy

Carnegie Rosstown

Chrinside Park West Lilydale

Clematis Paradise Valley

Coburg Pentridge

Collingwood Newtown

Flagstaff Hill Burial Hill

Garfield Cannibal Creek

Harrow Upper Glenelg

Mornington Schanpper Point

North Melbourne Hotham

Port Melbourne Sandridge

Safety Beach Shark Bay

Seville Redlands

Skye Lyndhurst South

South Melbourne Emerald Hill

St Arnaud New Bendigo Goldfield

Sunshine Braybrook Junction

Sydenham Keilor Road

Tarrington Hochkirch

Warburton Yankee Jim's

Warneet Crouch's Beach

Winchelsea Barwon

Wingeel Leigh Road

If you know of more – please feel free to let me know.

Have fun out there.

Chris
